My name is Suzie and I am currently living my best life in Israel. To be completely honest, I didn’t know what to expect on this trip. I had so many ideas about making the trip about my faith, or learning about the conflict, and even thinking about making some kind of documentary, but I kind of realized that this trip was way more than that. Being able to go to this land and seeing it through my own two eyes was just so mind-blowing and never even crossed my mind. The idea of coming to Israel didn’t feel real to me, but after being here the last few days I can honestly say it has been such an exhilarating experience.
We’ve only been here for 4 days, but it feels like it’s been a month because all the things we have seen and learned so far. That surreal feeling of being so close to the Gaza Strip, experiencing the history of Independence Hall, and seeing how Israel has developed into a strong country has been quite fascinating. What really touched me is the personal stories from people such as Yonatan from Sderot, Samuel from the JNF Playground, Shai’s personal experience in the IDF, and even the Ethiopian kids from the Yemin Orde Youth Village. They are the people of Israel, who live through this on a day to day basis. Their love for Israel, and their strength through difficult times, really shows the love and connection they have to this land that they call their home. Being able to hear their truth, their reality, and getting to really think about everything, has changed the way I look at life but also how I look at the country as a whole. The country of Israel has so much more depth, beauty, and complexity to it than many realize.
I still have a few days left in this beautiful country and I am excited to learn more, see more, and experience life in a whole new way.
