Student Spotlight: Elysia Martin

Name: Elysia Martin

Major: Jewish Studies

Campus involvements:

President of Christians United for Israel at AU, Chi Alpha student leader, Sigma Kappa Sorority

Why do you care about Israel?:

As a Christian Zionist, I believe in the right of self-determination of the Jewish people, and that the existence of the State of Israel is a direct result of that right.

What do I want others to know about Israel after getting to know me?:

The more time I spend studying Israeli society, the more I realize how beautifully diverse it is, and just how precious the little things in life can be--like sitting in Jerusalem's Independence Park enjoying some Aroma iced coffee, or star-gazing in the Negev, or herding alpacas in Mitzpe Ramon. (10/10 would recommend)

What's your favorite part about working with The David Project?:

What I love about the David Project is that it opens up the conversation about Israel to a wider audience, and because of that, I'm able to share my own experiences and love for Israel with people who might have only been exposed to negative media narratives. Quite simply, interning with the David Project gives me an excuse to talk about Israel constantly--and I love that.

Why do you think it's important to build relationships across campus communities?:

Relationships are at the heart of our very existence, so it's important that we make an effort to cultivate meaningful relationships on campus in order to learn from each other and build a strong, diverse pro-Israel coalition.

What are you most looking forward to as an intern this semester?:

I focus primarily on engaging the Christian community on my campus, and I'm really excited to see the Jewish and Christian communities continue building relationships with each other! Having an interfaith Shabbat dinner at AU is my DREAM.
