White Paper Summary

“A Burning Campus: Rethinking Israel Advocacy at America’s Universities and Colleges,” is a first of its kind conceptual analysis of both Israel’s standing on the American campus and what can be done to improve it. The report is the result of an in-depth review of the relevant literature, as well as interviews with a wide-range of campus and Jewish professionals and a decade of on-campus experience. The positions we take serve as a firm basis for a robust discussion of a critical issue facing Israel and its supporters. The overall findings and conclusions of the white paper are that the campus is not primarily a hostile environment, despite having been characterized that way. Some campuses are challenging or negative environments and some of these are the most important schools in the country. When you understand that most prominent campuses are negative and not hostile, it dictates the kind of advocacy you use. We feel very strongly that a more proactive and positive approach is in order because the fundamental challenge is not to try to change perceptions that Israel is an apartheid state, but rather to make sure that most students understand that Israel is a very strong U.S. ally, a vibrant democracy, and a country that pursues real peace.
